Can moms still be driven and ambitious?

Alright, so this post is intended for ALL moms.

Recently, I was having a discussion with my husband about what it’s like being a mom. (Sure, he’s a parent, but he’s not a mom!). We got onto the topic of how he used to think I was so ambitious when I was out in the workforce. But somehow over time or more specifically since I became a stay-at-home-mom, he started to think I lost my drive. I found this statement funny because I feel I am even more ambitious in my role as a mom than I ever was in my role as a therapist. So of course, I tried to explain this notion to him….

Being a stay-at-home mom (or a working mom for that matter) is a job just like any other job. While he has his “father” job in addition to his other job, it’s not the same as the mommy job. Being a mom is a tough job! If you’re not ambitious, this job could eat you alive!  But sometimes our goals don’t seem to be big ones to those looking in from the outside. For instance, some days my goals are just to brush my teeth, make sure to eat 3 meals and some snacks, and get one load of laundry done. Sure he may think this isn’t ambitious, but to a mom who is struggling to make it through the day, that’s SUPER ambitious!

I also explained to him that if I weren’t driven in my job as a mom, I wouldn’t care how much sleep my kids got or if they ate their meals, learned to socialize, talk or achieve any other developmental milestone. So I no longer have goals of being promoted or getting a raise, but that doesn’t mean my new goals as a mom are less important.

After explaining it in “man” terms like that, he began to understand my point and admitted that I am still the ambitious gal I used to be and thanked me for being driven enough to make sure his kids are happy and healthy!

Do you think moms can still be just as driven and ambitious as they were before kids? How has that changed or not changed for you?
