Kids get giddy at Disneyworld; moms get giddy at Target!
Target (or ”Tar-zjay” as I refer to it) is in every mom’s daily vocabulary. I have yet to meet a mom who doesn’t frequent the store at least once a week (unless they are hanging out at Target’s well-known cousin, Walmart). So why do moms love Target so much? I’m about to tell you…..
The Early Morning Entrance
What other store is open at 8am? For those of us with early risers, 10am is the middle of the day and that’s when many stores are just opening their doors. If your kids wake up at 6am and by 8am you’re thinking, “I have to get out of this house. But where could I go this early? The mall isn’t even open yet,” then Target is your saviour. (Of course, this is probably just a marketing tactic. Sure, hit us when we are weak and desperate for something to do. They know we won’t be able to leave without at least 1 bag).
The Mini Dollar Store
The dollar section when you first walk in is like kryptonite. You want to walk right by it without even a glance, but you can’t. Inevitably, you’ll see something out of the corner of your eye, and even though it wasn’t on your list 2 seconds earlier when you walked into the store, you suddenly realize you NEED it. Like the mini desk calendar. And the mini slinky. Ok, 2 mini slinkies. Oh, and the magnetic fridge pads to write down the things you need the next time you go to Target. (Now, the downside to the dollar section is that kids can’t ignore it either. Their little hands always seem to dive right into the bucket with the crappiest plastic toy in the aisle. And if you’re feeling particularly weak at that moment, they’ll be walking away with their new prize).
The Coffee Shop
I don’t remember when big chain stores started to house food courts and coffee shops, but that was one hell of a smart idea! My Target has a Starbucks in it, and even though I don’t drink coffee, I often stop for a hot chocolate to fuel my shopping trip. (And the occasional sweet treat as well). This becomes especially important if you are there at 8am, still groggy and wishing you were back in bed. My Target also has a mini Pizza Hut just in case I get stranded in the store for hours and need to eat (not that I would eat there unless I was literally about to pass out - have you seen the grubby teens that they employ at those in-store eateries?!).
Mom-Friendly = No Rude Looks
Since Target is so mom-friendly, if your child acts up, it’s likely that you won’t get those dirty looks that you’d get at some other stores. You know the looks. The “shut-your-kid-up-because-if-you-can’t-then-you-are-a-bad-mom” looks. I’m sure we’ve all gotten those before (and some of us may have even GIVEN those looks to other moms….of course, in our pre-mom days).
No-Receipt Returns
Unless you are one of those super anal, super organized moms who has their receipts filed away in little envelopes that are color-coordinated and alphabetized, you probably have to dig around in your wallet for a receipt when you are making a return. I try really hard to dedicate one section of my wallet for receipts so I can find them easily should a return be necessary, but I still find myself unable to find that one receipt I need when I am standing at customer service. This is where Target is a lifesaver. As long as you have the credit card you used to purchase the item, you don’t even need the receipt. They can look up the item and return it just by scanning your credit card. In my opinion, this is a space-saver (no need to keep all those Target receipts for months and months…which adds up if you’re there as much as I am), and a time saver (saving time at customer service means that you have longer to shop before your child loses their ability to hold it together).
If It’s Good Enough For Them….

Love it!! I don't get to frequent Tar-zjay as much as I want because there's none in my county, but I do go at least 2x a month. It is truly THE best store ever!!
And Walmart is the antichrist…

Your Target opens at 8? I'm so jealous. It would be so much easier if ours opened at 8 instead of 9 but sadly no.
I can go get me a venti chai from the starbucks & spend hours in there
I {heart} target! I love their seasonal section & the shoes & the purses &, ok fine. I just love everything.

I love everything about Target, mostly that I can get 95% of everything I'll ever need in one store, and I won't even bring up the kid's clothes clearance racks….so addicting!:)

Cute clothes without spending the kids college fund. Not that my kids really have a college fund but you know, in theory.

Love the kids' clothes. Not going to buy my kids stuff from Baby Gap or Gymboree, etc. when they're just going to stain or grow out of it in 6 months anyway!!
I love that it opens early, too!
What I really resent is not being able to leave there without spending $100.
I also wish they'd stop offering plastic bags. I think it's great they sell reusable totes/bags, but Target could really go green and be the next big company to shift in that direction.

I am a Target freak! I am sad I now live in a town with no SuperTarget. their food section was my source for yummy healthy snacks.

I love everything about Target! Everything you listed and I love their clothes! I hate shopping with my hubby, but at least when we go to target he can go play in the electronics and movie section!

I use to shop at the local grocery store chain. Then, one day, I decided to try Super Target. I saved over $30 on the same exact groceries! Now, I buy all my groceries there. Love it!

Makes me sad that we don't have Target up here in the Great White North! Maybe I should start petitioning for one.

Oooh mine has a Starbucks in it too! Its like a good morning out. Coffee for mom and a lil snack to keep the guy quiet in the cart. Some clothes, some books, something nice for the house and toys for the kids! The one con- spending too much damn money!!!

Ladies – thanks for helping to reassure me I am not the ONLY one with a Target addiction!

Should I even type this??? I am not as big of a fan of Target as I am Walmart. But Walmart is right around the corner from me and Target is not…it's 2 blocks further than Walmart
) I like shopping at Target but I always go to Walmart. Maybe it is time to broaden my horizon!?!?!?!

Helga – we won't chastize you here. After all, if my Target weren't so close, I might use Walmart. Except my Walmart is kind of gross!

I love Target too! But, I think it's one of those stores that's a "trap". It's impossible to leave without spending at least $100 (and I don't even have KIDS yet!). Whole Foods is the same way… you go in with a list and you leave with the items on your list + at least 3 extra things!
Happy belated VGNO!

Ann….so true! We don't have a Whole Foods close enough for me to frequent often, but when I do, I leave with way too much stuff for sure!

When ever I'm feeling down…a little Target love always perks me up! My favorite thing to do obviously is peruse the perimeter! Love Target clearance!

Oh Man! I'm so torn on this post. See, in my last life (that ended like 6 months ago) I was an Executive Team Leader for Guest Experience (super long title when we could just say Front End Mngr.)
So, really, too much Target is a never a good thing. And knowing what goes on behind the scenes- not so great either. But I love the store. And now I hate the store. Love, Hate, Love, hate. OMG someone send help!
And the yelling Moms! Really hate. Let me sum up the confusion by saying: If you are having difficulties in a retail store, yelling and swearing at the employees isn't gonna get you what you want. At least not while I'm the manager on duty. You get more flies with honey.
Trust me.

Look forward to reading more!

Ohhhh…. Target. it is a requirement to be my friend to have three things: You must shop at Target, enjoy Starbucks and like getting pedis. This is how much I love Target- I base my friendships on it.
I left a little present for you at my blog. If you get the chance, stop by and see!

It is sick how many times a week I go there!

Target is definitely the most mom-friendly store around (at least for me!). It's the one stop shop!!
(I call it Tar-zjay too, haha!)
