So many people are packing up and moving out. If you haven’t already noticed, there’s a trend in the blogging world: switching from Blogger to Wordpress. As someone who recently jumped on the bandwagon, I promised I’d share my reasons for doing so and offer some information on this topic. In my opinion, the Blogger versus Wordpress debate is similar in many ways to the PC versus MAC debate.

I initially wanted to switch to Wordpress (WP) because I thought that blogs hosted by WP looked much more professional and polished. For me, it was more aesthetically-pleasing to the eye. But after doing more research on the topic and talking to others about it, it was more than just the look that helped me make my final decision. Moving to Wordpress is not for everyone of course, so below are the pros and cons, which may help you decide if moving is right for you.

Blogger or Wordpress?

Blogger or Wordpress? Which is right for you?

Pros of Moving To/Using Wordpress

  • Most WP themes are very SEO-friendly. SEO stands for ’search engine optimization’ and essentially is about maximizing the chances that your blog will be found by search engines such as Google, Yahoo, etc. Why is this important? The easier your blog is to be found, the more traffic it receives, which helps you grow. You don’t have to know more than the basics to make your blog more SEO-friendly either, so don’t panic!
  • WP allows you to make navigation bars (i.e. tabs to various pages) that function more like those on a website. You can have a drop-down menu, just as I do on some of my navigation tabs. You can also have dedicated pages for those listed in the navigation bar. Whereas on Blogger, your navigation pages look exactly the same as your posts, you can customize your navigation pages to look different or block comments.
  • As soon as I decided I was moving to WP I knew I wanted a specific theme called Thesis. Why? I loved the ability to have post summaries at the bottom of my blog. Instead of showing the last 10 posts in full, I have the option of showing a certain number of full posts and a certain number of post summaries. While this is the theme I used, there are TONS of Wordpress themes out there, some of which are free. Do a search for “Wordpress themes” and you’ll see what I mean.
  • WP also has a lot more plugins (which in Blogger speak means widgets). You’ve probably seen things like “Comment Luv” in some comment section, which allows your last post to be listed under your comment. Another popular WP plugin is the “contact form” like I have under the “Contact” or “Advertising” tabs. This helps reduce spam and keeps you from having to publicize your email address.
  • Wordpress allows you to back-up all of the content on your blog. Since I usually write my posts directly on my blog rather than writing them in Word, if something happened to my blog, I would have nothing! This in itself made the switch worth it.
  • You know how annoying it is to upload your pictures to websites like Photobucket, then take that code and paste it into your post? WP has a “media library” on its dashboard, which eliminates that whole step. You can house your images on the dashboard and just click a button to add them in your post.
  • Ever get a spammer or reader who is less than pleasant visiting your blog? On Wordpress, you can see each visitor’s IP address and can block them individually if need be. In addition, WP has a great program that catches much of the spam that arrives on your blog rather than having to delete those posts manually like you do on Blogger.

There are many other reasons that I think Wordpress is superior to Blogger, but these are on the top of my list.

Cons/Things to Consider Before Deciding:

  • If you are moving from Blogger to Wordpress, it is possible that you may lose some subscribers by switching. While that doesn’t always happen, I feel I need to be honest and up front about that aspect. @atlmomguide on Twitter asked, “Can you keep your Google Connect Followers when you switch?” The answer is yes or most likely. My Google Friend Connect subscribers moved with me successfully. However, I did lost 200 subscribers who subscribe via my Feedburner feed. A bit depressing? Yes. Still worth making the move to Wordpress? Absolutely!
  • Wordpress actually has two different platforms. Wordpress.com is essentially Wordpress’ version of Blogger; there are rules about what you can/can’t do and you don’t have total freedom. I’ve even heard that you are not able to advertise on WP.com. Wordpress.org is a self-hosted platform, which means just like a website, you buy hosting space and a domain name. WP.org is not free like Blogger/WP.com, but the freedom you have on it is worth the small price you pay to host it.
  • If you started with Blogger and have been using it for awhile, the switch to Wordpress will have you in shock for a bit. The terminology is different, the dashboard is very different, and overall, it’s like learning a new program. While I have some tech skills and used to run a mom’s website (and by some, I mean only a bit above novice), it took me a couple of days to learn my way around. Two weeks later, I feel pretty good with my ability to navigate the dashboard. So don’t be intimidated if you are not a HTML or techie guru!

Many people asked what the pros and cons of moving were. Here are some other questions my readers asked about moving from Blogger to Wordpress:

  1. Shandal asked, “Is it really complicated to switch? Where did you find your web designer? Do they charge you?” I won’t lie; the switch can be a bit complicated and do your head in, or so I’ve heard. I used a website designer to facilitate the move and get me set up and I urge all of you to do the same if you plan on switching. I found my designer (their names/links can be found at the bottom of my blog) through references after asking around. I inquired with a couple to compare rates and services, and I am thrilled with my choice! Yes it did cost money, and a move like that is not super cheap, but it won’t break the bank either.
  2. Arizona Mamma asked, “Do you feel that WP is for serious bloggers?” I don’t know that I would word it that way, but I personally feel that WP blogs look more refined and professional. Many big companies, including some Fortune 500, use WP for their blogs, and I think that speaks volumes.

With all of that said, I am still thrilled about moving to the Wordpress neighborhood. I feel much more comfortable with this platform than I thought I would. I find it much more intuitive and easy to navigate and I’ve had lots of compliments on the new look.

If you’re still unsure where you stand on the debate, here are a couple more resources to check out.

Loved this post! I have wanted to move to WP for about 6 months, but have been dragging my feet since Blogger is EASY PEASY and I know what I’m doing there. I wanted to have the switch done b/4 Blissdom, so I could hang with the cool blogs (ha), but it hasn’t happened! I’m hoping very soon. Yes. That’s what I’ll keep telling myself… very soon!

Haha….I dragged my feet for a couple of months, too before actually signing up for the switch. I know what you mean about being content with Blogger b/c it is so easy. But I guarantee you will feel WP is easy once you get used to it. Let us know when you make the switch so we can all come and look at it! Good luck! Looking forward to meeting you at Blissdom!

Very good write-up :) I would caution those using Google Friend Connect that GFC will only transfer over if you are using a custom domain name with Blogger. If you have a mywebsite.blogspot.com — then you’ll have to create another GFC and start over from scratch. When I transferred one site a month ago, Google did not have the ability to change the domain name for the GFC account nor did they have a way to combine accounts.

And Hillary! I seriously need to transfer you or hook you up with @daisyolsen at BlissDom :) She’d be more than happy to get you off Blogger!

This is a very helpful post. I’ve been wondering about the specific advantages of WP over Blogger and, since I’m a new blogger, whether I should switch now before it becomes more complicated to do so. Thanks so much for clearing it up!

I always lean towards moving early on rather than later when you build up a following. Makes it easier and there’s less likelihood of losing subscribers. If you at all think you will end up switching, I say go for it soon. Glad you found it helpfil!

i have taken the first steps toward a move to wordpress. i wonder since i already have my own domain at blogspot will moving even affect my subscribers. they will still be subscribed to the same address it would seem.

[Reply]

Tamara Reply:

I had my own domain name at .blogspot also from about a month into blogging. I think the reason many of us lose some Feedburner subscribers is because a lot of those “subscribers” are search engine ‘bots’ or such. I am just guessing since I don’t know for sure though. But it definitely is VERY helpful to have your domain established before moving. Less to be disturbed, that’s for sure! When you move, let me know – I’d love to come see the new look! Good luck…and thanks for stopping by!

You have me seriously considering it now. Much like you did before your move, I just did a makeover. Did you use the same person to make the move, or was it a different designer? I ask, because the one who did mine doesn’t do WP. I would have to use someone else entirely, and don’t want to change my look (at least not much) now that I have it. What say you, Tamara? ;)

[Reply]

Tamara Reply:

I know who your designer is and contacted her for my own project (other than my blog), so you’re right, she doesn’t do WP. I don’t believe my original designer did WP either. Even if you use someone different (which you’d have to), they can use all of your same graphics, color scheme, etc. In fact, that keeps the project cheaper. Mine is the same graphics and colors so I wouldn’t have to redo all of that, but it looks very different b/c of the theme I chose. So if your only fear is that your blog will look different, don’t hesitate. It’ll be the new-and-improved-same-ole-AZMamma.com. (Just think of it like a facelift with a tons of functionality added in). ;-)

[Reply]

Lisa B @ simply His Reply:

@arizonamamma, Ditto what Tamara said. I work with a lot of designers who don’t “do” WordPress. I know the techie stuff and as long as they can give me the graphics and tell me what colors things are supposed to be, I can make WordPress look like that :) It would be good though to at least let your designer know you’re making the switch and make sure it’s ok to take the graphics with you (you might have to contact the designer for a graphic in a little different size) — basically you want to be sweet and not burn any bridges. Hope that makes sense :D

Great post. I’m on wordpress.com and want to make the move over to wordpress.org. I was wondering how hard the switch would be but I’m sure it can’t be any more challenging than your move. I love .com but think the freedoms of .org will be beneficial. Like you blog and plan to look around some more. Visiting from SITS.

wow I switched already and not for these reasons..but thanks for making me aware..I switched because i wanted to own my own site for future and because I did not want to have google delete my blog for no reason..well thats why i went to self hosting but WP was just a natural step I guess

Great post! I was going to say the same as Lisa, you only keep your GFC followers if you are not moving from a .blogspot.com domain. I didn’t have my own domain when I made the move back in June and I “lost” all of my followers on that blog. I put lost in quotations, because with a little bit of work you can still make sure those followers still get your new feed and new posts delivered. The only downside is that they don’t count as followers of the new WP blog.
Overall though, I’m so happy to have made the switch and would do it all over again.

Hi. I found your blog via Amy’s The Finer Things post. I found your post very helpful. I have been wanting to “make the switch” for sometime. Money is tight right now, but as soon as I can, I will be making the move. I am a huge fan of Five J’s Designs. I know she has done great work for many of you blog ladies, and I love your blog. I am looking forward to working with her, as well, when the time is right.
Thanks again for this post. It is always nice to know what to expect before making such a big “move”.

personally the programmer in me just loves WordPress, the ability to really get in there and massage the code to do exactly what you like. I did the Blogger route with a blog for school last semester and when compared to my WP blog, I just did not like it. I found the code confusing.

Now for people who don’t know coding, and can not get someone to get their Theme up and running Blogger is a great place for them, better than Wordpress.com. I hope that you continue to enjoy your new WP experience, and you have a great theme.

Tracy

Tamara Reply:

I absolutely agree. I think WP is a bit harder for those who don’t know ANY coding. While you don’t have to be proficient at it (although it helps!), the fact that you need to know some of the basics can overwhelm someone who isn’t very confident in making changes themselves to code.

Thanks for stopping by and thanks for your thoughts on the topic! Hope to see you again! ;-)

okay.
I have been looking for this post. So many people have mentioned switching, and I am always asking them why, and I am still waiting to hear a response. So this is prefectly timely.
However, you did not address one of my bigest pet peeves with blogger, and I hope that it isn’t because WP does the same thing. Or maybe blogger doesn’t do it, and I am the only one with this problem :)
I like to compose in bloggger, but I don’t always want to publish my posts in the order that they were composed (or started). I want to choose the order that my posts come up. Does WP let you do that?
Thanks Staci

I switched from blogger to Wordpress in August, but I have only had a blog since May. I have wordpress.com and I have a hard time figuring out plugins and such. I thought blogger’s widgets were easier. But I am not smart with this stuff at all.

26 staci @ teaching money to kids February 16, 2010 at 4:48 pm

Okay, its me again. But with a new questions this time.
I cannot figure out how to do the advertising.
Every thing I have read from Wordpress says you can’t do it unless you have 50,000 visits per month.
Well, I am nowhere near that at this point, but a girl can dream right?
So is there a different way to get advertising on a site, or am I not looking in the right places?

[Reply]

Tamara Reply:

Do you mean, you aren’t sure how to get people/companies to advertise on your blog? If so, then you don’t need 50,000 visits per month. Not sure where you are reading that, but I can tell you that you don’t need stats that big to get advertisers. The people who are advertising on my site approached me. But you can reach out to brands/companies to cultivate a relationship with them that may end in advertising. Hope that helped!

I just did the switch. Am happy but still a little confused figuring it out and fixing links and such.
Question: How to move my Google Friend Connect to my WP site?

[Reply]

Tamara Reply:

This was probably the trickiest of the whole switch. My designer had never done that before, so she had to read up on it, but did it successfully. Try Googling that phrase for tutorials. OR, if you are on Twitter, tweet that question out and add #savvyblogging at the end. Those gals tend to know lots of web design tricks & could point you in the right direction. It CAN be done! ;-) Congrats on the move….
